How to ship your car from the Canary Islands to mainland Spain: steps and documents

By William Sebastian Vega · Published on · Updated on

Moving, selling the car or simply needing it on the other side: these are the steps to take your vehicle from the islands to the mainland without surprises.

In short: the car crosses by ferry from its island's port to Huelva or Cádiz, and from there it is delivered to your address or collected at the port. You'll need the vehicle's documents and, because the Canary Islands have their own tax regime, a customs dispatch declaration.

1. Decide how you want delivery

  • Door to door: we collect the car from your address on the island and deliver it to your address on the mainland. It's the most convenient option if you don't live near the port.
  • At the port: you take the car to the departure port and pick it up at the arrival port. It can make sense if you live near both ports.

2. How the car travels

Tenerife and Gran Canaria have direct sailings to Huelva. Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma are on the public-service line with the mainland, and from La Gomera and El Hierro the car goes via Tenerife. The ferry between the Canary Islands and the mainland takes about 36 hours; add the wait for the sailing and the road leg.

3. Documents usually required

  • The vehicle's technical data sheet with a valid ITV inspection.
  • Vehicle insurance.
  • Registration certificate.

4. The customs formality: why it exists

The Canary Islands are part of Spain and the European Union, but they have their own tax regime: IGIC applies there instead of VAT. That's why, according to the Spanish Tax Agency, permanently sending a vehicle to the mainland or the Balearics requires a dispatch declaration (DUA) or a specific customs authorisation.

If the move is due to a change of residence, there may be tax exemptions for your personal belongings, including the car, as long as certain conditions are met.

5. Before handing over the car

  • Take photos of the car inside and out on collection day.
  • Hand over all the keys that will be needed at the destination.
  • Ask what you can leave inside the car.
  • Make sure the ITV and insurance will be valid when it arrives.

6. When the car arrives

The car keeps its Spanish plate, so it doesn't need to be re-registered. If you've moved, update the vehicle's address with the DGT and tell your insurer.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the departure island, the destination city, the service and the type of vehicle. For small vehicles, from €600. The quickest way to find out is to enter your route in our planner: it arrives on WhatsApp already written and we reply with the price.
